Schuyler welcomes dedicated and eager students of all ages and abilities in her studio.
Dr. Thornton has over a decade of teaching experience, and has previously been on the faculties at Lawrence Academy of Music (WI), Shenandoah Valley Academy (VA), Notre Dame High School (NJ), and Roxbury High School (NJ). Dr. Thornton has been published in Flute Talk and The Instrumentalist, and has led sectionals and presented masterclasses and recitals across the US at institutions including New Jersey Youth Symphony, Worcester Youth Orchestras (MA), James Madison University's annual Flute Fling!, and Rutgers University's Woodwind Day. She has completed additional coursework in flute pedagogy at Lawrence Conservatory of Music, James Madison University, and Rutgers University, as well as further pedagogy training through Patricia George (author of the Flute 101 series).
Lessons are taught in an encouraging and supportive environment that continue to push students to achieve their goals in a positive and uplifting manner. Lessons focus on healthy playing, tone development, technique, and musical expression. Additionally, Dr. Thornton strives for lessons to encompass multiple facets of music making including music theory and music history. Dr. Thornton works with each student to develop individualized long and short term practice goals, and provides multiple performance opportunities through recitals and masterclasses.
